This week, fourth graders were busy finishing their research into Alberta's natural landscape, resources and industries. Students had studied one region of interest and practiced their note taking skills while finding information about either The Rocky Mountains, Foothills, Grasslands, Parklands, Boreal Forest or Canadian Shield. Once research had been concluded, grade fours developed pic collages to illustrate what they now know.
We spent time sharing our information this week and becoming more well versed on each region. As a class, we made some generalizations about our province. In the coming weeks, we will be looking very closely at major resources and industries and how both affect our daily lives. Students will be asked to explore a resource from raw material to consumer goods.
In addition to Social Studies, fourth graders were also introduced to the "6+1 Writing Traits". Throughout term 2, students will be asked to employ a variety of traits into their Writers Workshop projects. These traits include Word Choice, Organization, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, Voice and Ideas. The "+1" is the presentation aspect of written work.
In addition to presenting work in Social Studies and Language Arts, we have also introduced our "Star of The Week" program into our classrooms. Each week, beginning in December, a student form each class will have the opportunity to share about themselves with the class. A letter detailing this program, as well as a schedule (*for 4.1/4.2) was sent by email earlier this week (4.3/4.4 will follow shortly). These documents are also attached below. Students are asked to bring two items during "their week". On the Monday of their week, we ask that a poster, scrapbook, photo album etc. is brought in to be put on display for the week. On the last day of the school week, students will present a keynote, iMovie, poster etc. to the class. Those who are not presenting will provide feedback and ask questions after the presentation.
