Math went from trepidation to excitement as we started multiplying larger numbers. The grade 4's were presented with 4 word problems in which they were asked to use any strategy to solve. Once the students had time to work through the problems on their own we shared the various strategies used. It was discovered that addition was utilized quite often. Having made that discovery students were determined that multiplication is a way to solve addition in a more efficient manner. So how do we multiply larger numbers?
The LATTICE MODEL!!!
We walked through the Lattice Model together and found a fun way to do multiplication without it being intimidating. The grade 4's were so engaged in this method they didn't want math class to end. We asked the students to teach this method to a family member and the response was very positive. It was exciting to see the smiles and the pride the students displayed as they found success with what could possibly be very challenging concept. If you haven't had the chance to see the short video on the Lattice Model please have a quick look at Edmodo.
Now we have moved into the word of division and students are working their way through 3 different ways... Grouping, Long and Short methods. They were all introduced to a number sentence that gave them the opportunity to build their own word problem! We will continue working through division next week as we are only at school for 2 days!
Science this week finished off the 30x30 Challenge and students will need to submit their charts on Monday! We are looking forward to seeing how many completed the challenge, and what you were up to this past month!
Planting, planting, and more planting! Indoors students are working on an experiment to figure out what type of plant they are growing! Each student was given a seed labeled A, B, C, D, or E and they will be monitoring the growth and making predictions as to what they have. Outside, our community garden plot is now planted and students will be taking observations around what happens. Feel free to stop by the garden and take a look at what is going on! (We are plot #13)
Please remember that the Southern Alberta History Tour is next week!
When packing please don't forget to label your things!
