Fourth graders haven't wasted a moment jumping into 2014 assignments! During Humanities this week, students were given the chance to finish up their research and guiding questions for their Social Studies topics. After meeting with their core groups, students partnered with another class to share information and ideas surrounding their resource and industry. (4.1 coupled with 4.3 and 4.2 coupled with groups form 4.4) On Friday, these larger groups worked together again to develop questions for the interviews they will be conducting with industry professionals.
In addition to our efforts in Social Studies, students began to explore the trait of "Sentence Fluency". We spent time looking at the rhythm, flow and cadence of sentences, both long and short. Fourth graders then demonstrated their understanding of fluency and run-on sentences by fixing many run-on sentence examples. We have introduced and used the traits of Word Choice and Sentence Fluency thus far.
Grade fours were also given time to write and reflect on their winter break and pick up where they left off on Writers Workshop projects. We are asking students to think of a 6+1 Traits goal each time they write. This would include either word choice and sentence fluency, as well as the future traits that will be explored: organization, ideas, voice, conventions and presentation.

Call for Volunteers!
The Connect Charter School's (formerly Calgary Science School) annual science fair is only a month away and we are in need of volunteer judges for this event to happen. Science Fair will be on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. No prior experience is necessary and it is a lot of fun. This is an important Connect Charter School event as it provides a forum for students to showcase their understanding and passion for science. In addition, volunteers are inspired and amazed by the quality of work and the interest that students have in their selected topics. Registration begins at 8 am on February 5th and judges will be finished around 12:30. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. If interested, please email Erin at [email protected] or 403-282-2890. Thank you in advance for your continued support of this event.
