This week in Science we accomplished a lot in the final stages of building our simple machine toys. As we built, tested, and tweaked, we noted the steps it took to get to the finished product. The students were faced with many challenges in this project including the use of the materials, changes in design, strength of their toy and how to make the simple machine part work. With brainstorming and feedback they all were able to work through those challenges.
On Thursday, all the grade 4's set up a toy shop to display and explain their toy to their peers. It was a lot fun to see other people's designs and imagination to come to life. Below are pictures from the Toy Shop.

Math was challenging this week! We explored the App "Number Pieces" to show numbers using base 10 models, reflected on the Empty Boxes Subtraction POW and played with Durer's Magic Square POW. There were many "AHA!" moments as students began to find the magic of the square. Conversations in math are directed around place value, carrying, borrowing and how numbers relate to one another. Although some of the problems are a challenge we always seem to have fun with numbers.
4.1 and 4.3 are skating on Wednesday, January 29th. (12:45 - 2:00ish). We did a call out for volunteers and were excited to see so many parents willing to help out. We are hoping that the ice in the rink is still around for us and the ice on the roads and sidewalks go away! Please remember to send helmets, skates, hockey sticks in a separate bag for transport.
Thank you!
